Smiths 2 inch 8 Days clock, updated 18.05.2024

Timepieces > S - Z > Smiths
This will be an overhaul of a Smiths 8 Days 2 inch motorcycle clock. Information research is on going.
The movements escapement is made by A.B.E.C., All British Escapement Co. Ltd.
Smiths English Clocks Ltd. seems to be also the manufacturer of the movement.

Web research:
S. SMITH & SON ,MOTOR ACCESSORIES, LTD. and  ALL BRITISH ESCAPEMENTS CO. LTD
In 1914, the automotive instrument segment became a separate entity, S. Smith & Son (Motor Accessories) Ltd, while the original company continued with watches, clocks, and jewelry until about 1930. The Motor Accessories business expanded, opening a factory in Cricklewood, acquiring Trier & Martin in 1919, and holding shares in M. L. Magneto Syndicate Ltd.
By the end of 1927, Smiths had acquired K.L.G. Sparking Plugs Ltd and a majority stake in Ed. Jaeger (London) Ltd, which became British Jaeger Instruments Ltd in 1931. Together, they produced nearly 100,000 car clocks annually but relied on imported platform escapements.
To address this, Allan Gordon Smith established All British Escapements Co. Ltd (ABEC) in 1928, with minority shareholders from France and Switzerland. Production began in 1932.

This limits the age of the clock after 1932.

The oil recesses still exhibit burrs resulting from the mechanical production process.
On both movement plates the the burrs are substantial.

With the appropriate tools, such as a wheel countersink (see below), the burr can be easily removed.
